If any Shrinky Dinks remained curled take a flat object (we used a craft rolling pin or you could use a spatula) to flatten them out. You can place a sheet of parchment paper over the designs as well to help keep them flat. They work really well and the colors come out bright and vivid! If you don’t have these items you could use a glass or another flat heat-proof object. As soon as the image has finished shrinking, quickly place an acrylic block or ceramic tile on top of it to help flatten any curled edges. But beyond this, smaller designs tends to work better as they maximise the cute factor and are the easiest to keep flat. Your home printer is a precision instrument, and feeding it a sheet of plastic requires specific settings to ensure both the quality of the print and the longevity of the machine. The most common shrinky dink plastic mistake made by beginners is printing digital files exactly as they appear on a monitor. Most traditional sheets are “slick,” meaning they are designed for permanent markers or colored pencils that grip a slightly textured or chemically receptive surface. This guide explores the technical requirements, digital preparation, and physical execution needed to master printing on shrink plastic.

Encourage bold, heavy coloring

Shrinky Dinks are children’s activity that was hugely popular in the 80’s. It all works and flattens out nicely. New printing technology can print those patterns on Shrinky Dink plastic—and scientists can then shrink the plastic so they can further their nano-scale investigations. However, the printing process takes time and is grievously expensive. Scientists who want manipulate the properties of certain materials work with nano-scale patterns printed with those materials. It’s a branch of science that looks at the properties of materials on very small scales.

Heat your oven to the temperature recommended by the instructions included with your shrink plastic. Once the cutting is complete, and before unloading your mat, check to see if the cut went all the way through. Now, select the new material from the material list by clicking "Browse Materials" and changing the Categories drop-down menu to "My Materials."

I recommend cutting between the petals too so that they shrink and curl, and separate. Tape your shrinky dink paper to the template so you don’t accidentally shift it and start coloring your design in. I wanted to stick to accessible materials and techniques, so I turned it into this mini bouquet using chenille stems. Leaving shrinky dink flowers partially curled will make sealing it a bit more of a challenge, however, it’s still quite doable. It can be hard to see what you’re coloring as you do it, but the colors get much stronger when you shrink it. You CAN also use permanent markers such as Sharpies for this.

As it heats up, the plastic will roll up slightly and then flatten out. Stay away from water based markers or waxy colored pencils or crayons that won’t hold the colors well after heating. If they struggle to flatten after you take them out of the oven, place them under a plate for a few seconds. "During cooking to watch it curl then uncurl and then bake a bit more. They turned out perfect!" Then they will flatten out again.

The last step is to select both the sunflower and the letter by clicking and dragging a box over top of both.
